Some LA Travels

So…I just got back from visiting a friend in LA.  Here are some things we ate and saw…

First, all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ at Hae Jang Chon.  The quality at this place did not suffer for quantity.  We started out with some pretty conventional stuff – pork and bulgogi…

Then we moved to pork belly and squid…

And finally wound up trying two kinds of beef tripe: honeycomb and abomasum.  I love the texture of honeycomb tripe, but I think it’s generally better when you really cook the heck out of it – not the best offal cut for fast-grilling.

The final round-up.  We must have had about a pound of meat per person

My hostess E and I hit up the Getty.  It was at this time that I discovered the cross-processing effect on my camera.  Perfect for setting up vintage-style Cali shots…

My gorgeous hostess gets a little tarred up at La Brea:

We break in Little Ethiopia to wash off tar and have a light, late lunch.  Something for vegetarians:

And tibs for the carnivores inspired by sabre-toothed tiger skeletons at the Page Museum.

There were an astonishing number of cake design shops on South Fairfax.  Some of them did pretty fondant-covered cakes…

And some specialized in sweets which border on Cake Wrecks fodder.

On my last day, we hit up a gloriously large flea market in Long Beach.  Because I was traveling light I was, tragically, unable to load up with awesome tea sets and Fiestaware.  But I got a nice sunburn!

We rested in the shade after our thrifting, with some fish tacos.

Not pictured: the mustard-fried cheeseburger I devoured at the In-n-Out drive-thru on the way to LAX.

And now…I’m back in New York and working on more food posts!  And missing 70 degree sunshine.  Brr…
